Charles Luther Claunch was born on February 7, 1906 at Jonesboro, Ark. He attended Jonesboro Grammar School and Jonesboro High School, and studied the violin at the Chicago Musical College during the summer of 1923. He lived in Jonesboro until September, 1923, when he attended Washington and Lee University, receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree from there in 1927 and an LL.B. degree in 1929. He moved to Chattanooga on June 6, 1929, where he became an associate of Strang and Fletcher law firm until 1931 with no financial compensation. He then became an associate of Silas Williams for $25 a month until 1934, when he married Annie Elizabeth Colvard. He became counsel for the Home Owners Loan Corporation until 1935, making $166 a month. He became an associate of Chalres A. Noone at the beginning of 1935, leaving there on February 1, 1936, and opening his own office at 909 Chatt Bank Bldg, where he stayed until October, 1936. Ralph Shumaker and John Mahoney joined him in the firm of Claunch, Shumaker, and Mahoney, until 1937, when Mahoney left the firm. The firm of Anderson, Claunch, and Shumaker was formed in 1938, and remained as such until May 1, 1942. He then became an associate of the firm Taber, Chambliss and Swafford until he was made a member of the firm on January 1, 1944. He remained with Taber, Chambliss, Swafford and Claunch until October 31, 1954, when he opened his own office at the Chattanooga Bank Building. Ralph Shumaker rejoined him in the new firm of Claunch and Shumaker on July 1, 1956. Frank M. Thompson in 1961. In July, 1964, the firm ws dissolved and he moved to the 450 Pioneer Building, where he has since practiced. In 1968, he became "Of Counsel" to the law firm of Bishop, Thomas, Leitner, Mann & Milburn, but has maintained his own office in the Pioneer Building.
