Biographical Sketch

Daughter of Waller Stephens & Lucy Adams Stephens of Orange county, Virginia. She was the granddaughter of Benjamin Stephens (FAG# 96467884) and Dorothy Jemima Waller Stephens (FAG# 95835268). She was the sister of William Edmund Stephens who died in Cass county, Missouri in 1856.

Elizabeth & Jarvis had at least one child who is not linked to this memorial. Lucy Ann Haydon is #7579343. She was born 17 Auugust 1828 & was the wife of Edward Nelson Peyton. They had at least two children, Mary E. Peyton & Horace Edgar Peyton.

At the time of the Civil War, Elizabeth (called Betsey) was a widow. During the frightening times of 1864, but before General Order #11 required citizens to leave the county, Betsey fled to the safety of the Kentucky seat of the Stephens family, Kenton county, where she was taken in by her uncle, Leonard Stephens at his fine home at Beech Woods.

On 16 August 1864 Leonard Stephens wrote to his brother William: Betsey Haden left here this day a week ago on her return home to Missouri. She expected to have staid in Kentucky for some time yet. But the military authorities issued a very stringent order requring all persons who had come into this state from Missouri to leave within 20 days. The order was issued on the 26th of July and had expired. She had determined to return to Missouri anyhow and would not consent to make her home here with me as I desired she should. I regretted very much to part with Betsey for she made herself very useful here. I shall have some uneasiness about her until I learn of her safe arrival at home. She had no friend or acquaintance to Accompany her and had to depend entirely on her own management to get along.

It was not until after the war that Leonard Stephens learned that Betsey had made a safe return to Harrisonville.
