Biographical Note:
Joel F. Stewart came to Collin County from Missouri in 1845 and settled one mile north of McKinney. Later he headrighted land seven miles northwest of McKinney, rearing nine children.

"The record shows that the following elections had taken place earlier ... and Joel F. Stewart, justice of the peace, on April 17, 1846."

"The United States list of post offices and postmasters of Collin County (See Chapter XI, Section B) shows that the post office at Buckner was discontinued and mail set to McKinney effective May 3, 1848, and that Joel F. Stewart became the first postmaster at McKinney on May 31, 1848."
